A little History...
The Old Town neighborhood is a lovely oasis in the southern end of downtown Lancaster Pennsylvania which has a dramatic and unique story of decline and rebirth, much like the city itself. It’s an award-winning preservation project in which several blocks of dilapidated buildings were saved from the wrecking ball by an urban revitalization in the 1970s and 80s. Buildings ranging in age from 80 to 200 years were restored and street patterns were rearranged to create a city showpiece. While the traditional exteriors were preserved, the interiors of each home are unique with unexpected and surprising designs. In addition, new homes were incorporated into the neighborhood to blend seamlessly with the historic structures around them. In the process lots were reconfigured to add garages and secret hidden gardens were created, which can only be seen by the public at the House and Garden tour held every other year in June. The neighborhood also includes two small city parks which are developed and maintained by an active homeowners association.
Any time of the year is a great time to visit Old Town, to walk the streets and enjoy the beauty of its homes and landscaping. But to really see its secrets, the house and garden tour is a must see. You won’t be disappointed!
